At the 2017 AMD Financial Analyst Day, AMD announced it will launch the VEGA professional graphics card, Ryzen APU, and the new Epyc server CPU brand. But now, the company has released more details about the 32-core Naples server chip. It consists of 8-core Zen units, can be connected to 8-channel memory, and has 128 PCIe 3.0 links. From the specifications, the Epyc server chip has been quite attractive, but for the data center administrators, how the real performance in the end? How is AMD going to install them on the rack?

It turns out that AMD does not intend to take Epyc (Naples) CPU and Intel's top Xeon processor as competitors , but it wants to seize the dual-slot (2S) server this particular market.

In the same performance case, Epyc alternative board can be more compact, thereby reducing the cooling and energy needs. To illustrate this point, AMD specifically demonstrated the comparison of its dual-slot Epyc system with the Intel Xeon E5-2699A v4 CPU.What is more, AMD does well in networking solutions and embedded computers.

Epyc chip on the test platform, with 32 physical core, support for Hyper-Threading technology, and is equipped with 256GB eight-channel memory; the latter has 22 core, 55MB cache, with less with 128GB of memory.

The results show that Epyc platform only took 15.7 seconds to complete the Linux kernel compiler. In contrast, the Intel Xeon platform spent 22.5 seconds, the gap was pulled to 43%.

But AMD also pointed out that the current Intel Xeon E5-2699A v4 CPU shipments are not so much. Because the ES-262x and ES-265x series still account for the bulk of shipments, and the ES-264x series of sales is the best.

In another set of comparative presentations, the AMD single-slot Epyc system + 128GB RAM system can even "singled out" the Intel Dual Xeon ES-2650 v4 processor platform (12 cores per channel).
