IDT Energy is the latest electricity supplier that will pay refunds to customers to settle a state probe into allegations that customers were overcharged during a harsh winter several years ago.

The settlement, approved last week by the Public Utility Commission, requires IDT to pay $2.4 million in refunds in addition to $4.1 million in refunds it already has voluntarily paid.

IDT also will pay a $25,000 fine, pay $75,000 for a third-party administrator to issue the refunds and contribute $75,000 to a hardship fund that helps those in need pay their utility bills.

The state attorney general's office and Office of Consumer Advocate had alleged IDT misled customers with deceptive promises of savings; mishandled customer complaints; failed to provide accurate pricing information; and charged different prices than listed in customer disclosure statements.
